Coronation Street
Affectionately known as Corrie and The Street, it is one of Britain's best loved soaps and the longest-running in the country, making its debut on 9th December 1960. It has won several awards over the years and is one of the highest-rated programs - if not the highest - on British TV.
Set on a fictional street in a fictional suburb of Manchester, England, it focuses on the varied lives of the residents, their businesses and families, the problems they face and how they interact with each other.

Themes and Story Lines
Like most soaps, Coronation Street covers a range of everyday topics such as relationships, marriage, divorce, births and deaths. There have been murders, affairs and characters with psychological problems. There have been 'cutting-edge' storylines such as a transsexual character, drug dealing, teenage pregnancy, religious cults and same-sex relationships which were considered taboo when they were first introduced. (It seems to me that soaps compete with each other for stuff like this.)
According to Wikipedia, Coronation Street also has a tendency for strong, prominent female characters, some of whom have become household names and archetypes. This is a trend that has been present from the birth of the show up until the present day. Coronation Street itself also relies on stereotypes and there are several present in the show today, from the nagging mother-in-law to the lazy, trouble-causing teenage boy.
Why Make a Fanlisting?
Corrie is set in my hometown, Manchester - coincidentally, I run the Manchester fanlisting (shameless plug). I was brought up watching it. In fact, it is the first thing I remember watching. I also remember visiting the studio where it is filmed. I still watch it, even now that I've left home.
It has become a quaint little habit of mine. There's something symbolic about the Coronation Street theme tune for me; I think it subconsciously reminds me of sitting in front of the TV with my family. 7:30pm is now a landmark time; I have sometimes turned the TV on at 7:30 before remembering that it's a Tuesday and 'not a Corrie day'.
I'm not much of a TV person. Coronation Street is the only TV show that I watch regularly and the only soap that I follow. I explain it as being a matter of Manchester pride, but there must be more to it than that. Maybe it's because I'm interested in the characters' lives due to the number of years that I've been watching it. Maybe it's because it's so entertaining: there have been some great dramatic, tragic and even comedic moments over the years. Whatever it is, I just have to know what happens. If I miss an episode or if I know I'm going to be away for a while, I even look at the previews and/or episode reviews on Corrieblog.
